## The org chart is being redrawn.

[Anthropic](https://www.anthropic.com/research/employment-at-anthropic) studied its own workforce in October 2026. Agent hours now outnumber human hours **6 to 1**, and around **80%** of an agent session is spent waiting for a person. Human attention has become the bottleneck. Hiring managers talk more about judgment and autonomy, and less about domain expertise. One employee put it this way: “that 20% that was strategic becomes 90% of the job.”

## The motor went where the engine stood.

When factories got electricity, most kept the old floor plan and saw little change. The gains came once they were rebuilt around the new power, as [Paul David](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_A._David) of Stanford showed in [The Dynamo and the Computer](https://gwern.net/doc/economics/automation/1990-david.pdf) (1990). AI is at the same point.

### 1900s

Factories swapped the steam engine for a motor and kept the line shafts. Little changed until each machine got its own motor and the floor followed the work.
